Innovative Financing for Stronger Health Systems: Promise versus Reality
February 10, 2012
Adequate, sustained, and equitable financing is the foundation of all health care systems. Yet the design and implementation of feasible and sustainable financing strategies pose persistent challenges. People have touted innovative financing as the path to sustainability and effectiveness. However, all "innovations" are not created equal and their effectiveness varies.
The discussion will explore the policy and programmatic implications of innovative health financing mechanisms. The panelists will discuss examples of innovative health financing mechanisms, drawing the link to how such mechanisms affect policy and can be used to strengthen health systems. They will also discuss the unintended effects of innovative financing mechanisms, presenting lessons learned and discussing ways to ensure that new health financing policies support sustainability and equity in health systems in the developing world.
