President Obama announces release of new U.S. Global Development Policy

Summary

In a speech given at the Millennium Development Goals Summit, President Obama announced the release of a new U.S. Global Development Policy stating that “it outlines our new approach and the new thinking that will guide our overall development efforts.” President Obama proceeded to highlight the ways in which this new policy would change the U.S. approach to development. A fact sheet released by the White House provides details of the new U.S. Global Development Policy including the three “pillars” guiding the policy, implementation steps, and details on how the policy is already being applied in the Global Health Initiative (GHI), the Feed the Future Initiative (FtF), and Global Climate Change Initiative (GCCI).


In a press release, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah stated that “USAID is pleased to play a leading role in the implementation of President Obama’s vision for global development.” USAID also released a fact sheet titled “USAID and the President’s Global Development Policy” describing ways the agency is already working to implement the priorities of the new policy directive through its “new approach to high impact development.”


The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) CEO Daniel W. Yohannes released a statement acknowledging that “MCC is a critical part of the Administration’s global development strategy.” MCC also released a fact sheet detailing MCC’s role in the new U.S. Global Development Policy.
